Last Wednesday I blogged about one unforgettable tradeshow experience and promised to follow it up with a list of IBM i tradeshows, conferences, and user groups we’ve attended over the years. Back 5 years ago when I first started the IBM i conference circuit, some were still known as “System i” gatherings. I won’t digress down memory lane to recite every IBM name change (that’s what we talk about at IBM i conferences when there’s an awkward silence and you don’t know what else to say to the attendee killing time before the next session starts).
So, without further ado, here’s the Krengeltech hitlist of IBM i conferences and user groups we’ve attended over the years. Some offer more opportunity for networking and learning than others on an ongoing basis, but I’m hopeful there’s one near you that you can get involved with! (At some of these we even give away the beautiful, yet functional stainless steel coffee mug shown below to thirsty attendees).
Common is the largest annual gathering of IBM i professionals. Last year the annual conference was held in our home state of Minnesota. It snowed in May. (Probably the last time it will be held in our home state of Minnesota). This year’s conference is in the slightly warmer locale of Disneyland, California and will feature sightings of Mickey Mouse instead of Paul Bunyan. Check out more info on Common here and follow them on Twitter @commonug.
RPG DB2 Summit
RPG DB2 Summit is held twice annually with the next conference scheduled for March 26-28, 2012 in Fort Worth, Texas. This event is led by the System i Developer team of Jon Paris, Susan Gantner, Paul Tuohy, and the recently retired Skip Marchesani. Paul’s attempts at humor are worth the price of admission alone. For more information check out www.systemideveloper.com.
IBM i DevCon
IBM i DevCon is a 3 day conference for IBM i developers. Last year’s conference was keynoted by Aaron Bartell and held during the month of November in Las Vegas. This year’s date is yet to be determined but should occur in the October-November timeframe. More information on the previous conference can be found here.
Toronto User Group (TUG)
TUG hosts an annual IT conference usually around the April timeframe in Toronto, Canada. See what’s going on monthly by visiting www.tug.ca, eh?
Wisconsin Midrange Computer Professional Association
WMPCA is an IBM i user group in Wisconsin. This year’s annual IT conference is March 20-22 in Lake Geneva. Despite the fact that there is sure to be some Green Bay Packer banter we will still be attending! Get plugged in and learn more about WMPCA here.
Northeast User Groups Conference
NEUGC is the largest gathering of IBM i professionals in the northeast. Their annual conference is held just outside of Boston and is taking place April 2-4, 2012. Over 75 educational sessions are planned for the conference. Check out what NEUGC has to offer at their website and follow them on twitter @NEUGC.
Michigan IBM i Technical Education Conference
MITEC is a one day power packed event held in Livonia, Michigan. Last year’s event was on June 7th. Look for this year’s agenda and date (when determined) by visiting www.gomitec.com.
Ocean User Group of Southern California
Ocean is an IBM i user group which meets monthly in Orange County, California. Their annual conference is usually held in July, a great time to be in southern California. Check out Ocean at www.ocean400.org.
OMNI is a IBM i user group based in Chicago, Illinois. OMNI’s next meeting is tomorrow! Check them out at www.omniuser.org.
QUSER is a user group in Minneapolis/St.Paul, Minnesota which brings in IBM i speakers 7 times a year for educational advancement. See what’s coming up at www.quser.org.
If you’re involved with an IBM i user group or conference not listed above, share by leaving a comment to this post!
Hope to see you at an upcoming event in 2012!
